Challenges of adopting children
with severe trauma:
Many caregivers who adopt children with profound trauma face a daily struggle that puts their family’s safety and well-being at risk. These children may have Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), conduct disorder, oppositional defiance, or psychopathic tendencies, and may act out against their caregivers as a result of their past traumas.
Consequences of trauma
on children and families:
Some of these children may struggle with addiction and mental health issues. To protect themselves and their families, caregivers may have to turn their homes into fortresses with cameras, videos, and alarms. The situation may get worse, with some children making false accusations, urinating on objects, harming animals, becoming physically violent, starting fires, sexually abusing their siblings, and seeking revenge on their adoptive families due to lack of coping skills. Often, the mother is seen as the enemy by a child with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). Sadly, a child may choose to live on the streets rather than follow their caregivers’ rules when they turn 18 years of age due to the faulty wiring of their brain and lack of coping skills.
Lack of support and resources:
Caregivers who adopted with the hope of creating a family may feel defeated and hopeless in the face of daily trauma. They may find it impossible to help their child or their other children. They may also have limited support and scarce affordable treatment options. They may feel alone and trapped in a state of crisis and survival. We are here to support you.
We need your help:
Our services are free for our families, but we depend on your generosity to keep them running. We are committed to supporting families with empathy and care.
Thank you for supporting Attach Families: Your generous donation makes a difference in the lives of many families who need emotional support during difficult times. You help children who have suffered from complex trauma, such as Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), by giving them access to an educational advocate. You also help caregivers by providing them with free resources and a parent peer support specialist who is available 24/7 to offer comfort and guidance when they face challenging situations related to their child’s trauma. These are just some of the valuable services that Attach Families offers for free. Our mission is to support families regardless of their ability to pay.
We understand the financial challenges of raising a child with trauma: Caregivers often face high costs when they seek professional help for their child, which insurance may not cover. We want to make sure they get the support they need without adding to their financial stress.
